One August afternoon, Lady Blemley was in her sitting room. Some of her friends were with her. She liked to have her friends for the weekend. Their names were Miss Resker, Miss Pellington, Mrs Cornett and Mr Cornelius Appin. Mr Appin was a young man.
He said, “I can teach English to animals.”
“ Can you?” said Lady Blemley.
“Yes. Your cat, Tobermory, can speak English now.”
“No,” they all said. “It’s not true.”
“Yes it is,” said Mr Appin.
Lady Blemley said to her husband, “Wilfrid, get Tobermory, please.”
Sir Wilfrid went out. He came back without Tobermory.
“It’s true!” he said. “Tobermory was on my bed. I said, “Tobermory, come with me! And he answered me!”
“He didn’t!” they all said.
“He did,” said Sir Wilfrid. “He said, ‘I’m not ready. Is my milk in the sitting room?’”
Then a girl came into the room with tea. Tobermory came too.
“Good afternoon, Tobermory,” said Lady Blemley.
Lady Blemley put some milk on the floor for him.
They all looked at him.
“Must you look at me?” he said. “More milk.” Lady Blemley put down some more milk. Miss Resker said, “Tobermory, can I ask a question?”
“Must you?”
“Tobermory, do you like me?” said Miss Resker.
“I do not know about you much,” said Tobermory. “Sir Wilfrid likes you. I saw you two in the garden this morning.”
Miss Resker’s face was read. Sir Wilfrid’s was, too.
“But you like me, Tobermory,” said Miss Pellington.
“Lady Blemley doesn’t like you,” said Tobermory.
“Tobermory!” said Lady Blemley. “She is my old friend!”
“Perhaps,” said Tobermory. “She is going to buy your car, isn’t she? It’s no good. Too old, like her.
Lady Blemley’s face was red. Miss Pellington’s was, too.
“Tobermory,” said Mrs Cornett. “Lady Blemley and Sir Wilfrid are buying your food.” “They are buying yours too,” said Tobermory.
“You said, ‘I don’t like the Blemleys much, but the food is good.’”
Mrs Cornett’s face was red.
“Tobermory,” said Sir Wilfrid, “out.”
Tobermory looked out of the window.
“Out now,” said Sir Wilfrid. Tobermory went out of the room.
“Mr Appin,” said Lady Blemley, “can Tobermory teach English to all his cat friends?”
“Yes,” said Mr Appin. “Then, Wilfrid, we must….”
“Yes,” said Sir Wilfrid. “Tonight.”
But Tobermory listened at the door. He went away and didn’t came back.
Where is Tobermory now? They don’t know. Is he in your house?
“Tobermory” ismli mushuk
Avgust oylarining tush mahali Blemley xonim do`stlari bilan dam olish xonasida o`tirar edi. U dam olish kunlarida do`stlari davrasida bo`lishni xush ko`rardi. Xususan, Resker xonim, Pellington xonim, Cornett xonim hamda janob Cornelius Appin. Janob Appin yoshgina bir yigit edi.
U gap orasida hayvonlarga ingliz tilini o`rgata olishini aytib qoldi.
“Rostanmi?” so`radi Blemley xonim.
“Ha, hatto mushugingiz, Tobermory ham ingliz tilida gaplasha oladi’’.
Hamma baravariga bir ovozdan “Yo`q, bu haqiqat emas” deyishdi. Janob Appin ham bu fikga qo`shildi. Blemley xonim turmush o`rtog’i, Wilfridga mushugi Tobermoryni olib kelishini so`radi. Janob Wilfrid tashqariga chiqib ketdi va mushuksiz qaytib keldi.
“Bu haqiqat” dedi u. “Tobermory kravatimda, unga men bilan kelishini aytdim. U ham javob berdi.”
“U gapira olmaydi” deyishdi.
“Gapirdi” javob berdi janob Wilfrid. U aytdi: “Men hali tayyor emasman, sutim mehmonxonadami?”
Shu orada xonaga bir qiz choy olib kirdi. Tobermory ham keldi.
“Xayrli kun, Tobermory” dedi Blemley xonim.
“Sutim qayerda?” so`radi Tobermory.
Uning ichishi uchun Blemley xonim polga bir oz sut quydi.
Hamma unga tikildi.
“Menga qarashlaring shartmi?” dedi u. “Ko`proq sut bering”
Blemley xonim yana bir oz sut quydi.
Resker xonim: ”Tobermory, sendan bir savol so`rasam maylimi?”
“So`rashingiz shartmi?”
“Tobermory meni yoqtirasizmi?” so`radi Resker xonim.
“Siz haqingizda ko`p ham o`ylaganim yo`q” aytdi Tobermory.
“Janob Wilfrid sizni yoqtiradi. Bugun ertalab bog’da ikkalangizni birga ko`rdim.“
Reskerning yuzi qizarib ketdi, janob Wilfridniki ham.
„Lekin meni yoqtirasiz, Tobermory“ dedi Pellington xonim.
“Blemley xonim sizni xushlamayli” dedi Tobermory.
“Tobermory!” dedi Blemley xonim. “U mening eski do`stlarimdan!”
“Balki,” dedi Tobermory. “U sizning mashinangizni sotib olmoqchi, shunaqa emasmi? Bu yaxshi emas. U kabi eski.”
Blemley xonimning yuzi qizarib ketdi. Pellington xonimniki ham.
“Tobermory” dedi janob Cornett. “Blemley xonim va janob Wilfrid sizning ovqatingizni sotib olib berishyaptiku.”
“Ular ham siznikini sotib olib berishyaptiku” said Tobermory. Siz: “Blemleyni unchalik ham yoqtirmayman, lekin baribir ovqat yaxshi” deb aytgan edingiz.
Cornett xonimning yuzi qizarib ketdi.
“Tobermory”, “tashqariga” dedi janob Wilfrid.
Tobermory derazadan tashqariga qaradi.
“Hoziroq tashqariga” dedi janob Wilfrid.
Tobermory xonadan chiqib ketdi.
“Janob Appin” dedi Blemley xonim, “Tobermory ingliz tilini o`zining do`stlariga o`rgata olarmikan?”
“Ha” dedi janob Appin.
“Keyin, Wilfrid, biz majburmiz…..”
“Ha” dedi janob Appin. “Tonight.”
Lekin Tobermory eshik ortida barchasini eshitib o` tirgandi. U yugurib ketdi va boshqa qaytib kelmadi.
Tobermory hozir qayerda? Ular bilishmaydi. U sizning uyigizda emasmi?
